1) Counseling: We conduct an average of 2,500 counseling sessions at our office in Northern Allegheny County. Approximately 40% of our clients pay on a sliding scale fee basis. Professional counseling services include: crisis intervention, elementary-age intervention, family counseling, marital counseling, single adult counseling, and young adult and teen counseling.
Bereavement Support Group: Bereavement, or grief, is how one reacts to a loss. There is no right or wrong way to grieve after a significant loss. Many people learn to move on with their grief, even though it is extremely difficult. We offer a Bereavement Support Group at Haber Hall, St. Sebastian's Parish twice a month (2nd and 4th Wednesday, 1 - 2:30 p.m.) to help Widows and Widowers (over 50) learn to cope with their loss.
2) Education: Parent Education and Prevention Outreach Services: We offer a wide-ranging variety of workshops and courses throughout the community for parents on specific child-rearing themes, presentations on family issues, and leadership training seminars (Act 48). We offer a monthly discussion group for parents of teens. Discussion topics include: Esteem Building & Perfectionism, Drama Queens & Messy Scenes, Marvelous Self Care for Moms, Resolving Conflict - Whose Problem is This, Teen Dating & Healthy Boundaries, and Responsibility, Holding on & Letting Go. Through our Healthy Communities*Healthy Youth Initiative we work to develop strong community partnerships, providing education (based on the Search Institute's 40 Developmental Asset framework) as to the role each individual can play in nurturing competent, caring, and responsible youth - working toward a common vision of what is needed to promote the healthy development of young people.
3) Tutoring: Reducing the risks facing children is a great challenge. Our Youth Development Program, opened in 2001, has continued to grow and thrive with promising results. The counseling program focuses on improving emotional, relational, and spiritual health of its young clients and thrives to restore effective communication within their families. The tutoring/mentoring component seeks to increase the self-worth and academic achievements of at-risk youth and focuses on helping these youth achieve success in terms of completing homework, studying for tests, improving grades, and fulfilling other curriculum requirements.
