The Youth Development Program offers academic support and asset-building nurturing to children receiving counseling at the North Hills Youth Ministry Counseling Center. It operates year-round and is open to children in kindergarten through 12th grade. Students work one-on-one with their assigned tutors for 1 – 2 hours each week. Individualized programs are developed for each student to strengthen his specific academic weaknesses. The tutoring sessions reinforce the following areas: reading, math, written expression, study skills, organization, and homework completion.
The unique combination of counseling and tutoring meets the needs of the WHOLE child by simultaneously addressing his mental health issues and educational concerns. Tutors are matched to students according to their subject expertise and grade level preferences.
The tutoring program supplements school instruction and works closely with students’ teachers and guidance counselors. School personnel appreciate having an additional support system with whom to share ideas, concerns, and strategies regarding their at-risk students. Our therapists recognize the need for academic support for many of their clients and are grateful to have a program that can address these concerns. Our Youth Development Program manager provides on-going support to all volunteer tutors and acts as a facilitator of communication between the child’s home, school, therapist, and tutor. The coordinated involvement of all these parties is essential to bringing about academic success and long-lasting positive changes in the youth.
